CLC Course in San Diego, CA
I recently had the opportunity to go to San Diego to become certified as a CLC. This was an interesting adventure for Saffron and I. I was quite shocked that it was cheaper to fly and stay in San Diego than in Chicago or Florida! Seemed a bit backwards to me that way but hey, who am I to argue!
Being my first time flying, and with an infant too, I must say I was a bit nervous. However our flights were quite enjoyable, despite a couple long layovers, one in Salt Lake City and one in Houston. I must say Saffron traveled very well, and we were complemented frequently by fellow travelors on her quiet and good behavior. Also on her good looks!
We took advantage of our Saturday and Sunday before the class began doing a little sightseeing. In San Diego the easiest and cheapest, way of getting from point A to Point B is bus or trolley and a little walking. This was fun, and a new experience as well. Not once id we go anywhere and not get comments about Saffron and huow adorable she is. The bad thing about the bus/trolley system was that not knowing where anything was it was a bit harder to find affordable places to eat. So we only ate one good meal a day! LOL
We went to the San Diego Zoo on Sunday and spent the entire day there without seeing all the animals!!! It was huge!!! I believe it was over 100 acres and only a small portion of a park in the center of town! I think my favorite would have to have been the Koalas they were adorable and a few had babies that they were carrying. Also the Giant pandas, not so giant though, were neat. There was a momma baby pair of them as well. The baby was about 9 months old and still nursing. In Pandas they are teeny tiny at birth, and nurse untill about 3-4 years old.
Class started on Monday and finished on Friday. It was quite interesting. Most of the people in the class were nursing staff and several worked in a NICU. There were a couple of midwives, and at least one outspoken Ped! She was funny! Really, very few of them knew much about breastfeeding going into the program and some of the questions asked were quite entertaining.
The instructers were both very interesting and I must say knowledgeble. The main one seemed to know so much that it was hard to hold an inteligent conversation with her though. She treated others as if they were stupid and that she knew it all. This was a bit frustrating to me at times.
I learned a few new things and was taught a few things that I don't agree with, but thats how it goes in anything I am sure.
I was glad to be back home to my family and anxiously awaited my certification and the acknowledgement that I had passed the exam. I did, with a 92%!
On to bigger things and to continue school and helping mother's and babies along the way!
